Home Affairs officials linked to Bushiri fraud

South Africa

Johannesburg – Five Home Affairs department officials have been suspended for the role they played in fraudulently getting self-proclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri a South African permanent residence permit.

The officials have been charged internally and will face disciplinary procedures.

Bushiri and his wife, Mary, are on the run after skipping bail and fleeing to Malawi in November 2020.

The self-proclaimed prophet is facing fraud, theft and money laundering charges.

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said the department’s case does not include an investigation on how the Bushiris escaped the country.
