Johannesburg – The SA Weather Service (SAWS) says there’s no evidence of a tornado in Alice, Eastern Cape.
Hundreds are left destitute after a severed thunderstorms and heavy winds hit the Eastern Cape. The Amathole District Municipality said 200 homes were affected on Monday, December 13.
The Gift of the Givers Foundation has said that over 1000 homes in Fort Beaufort, Alice and Middledrift have been partially or completely damaged.
Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman said the damage seems to be worse in Fort Beaufort.
On Monday, the SA Weather Service issued a Level 4 Yellow warning for the Eastern Cape, warning of severe thunderstorms with excessive lighting and damaging winds.
According to SAWS, the weather warning did indicate severe storms with strong, damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours. All of which resulted in widespread damage to houses, and a hospital in Fort Beaufort.
There is however, no evidence of a tornado in the area on their surveillance systems.
This is the second severe storm to hit the Eastern Cape in less than a week.
