Johannesburg – President Cyril had a virtual meeting with faith leaders in May to discuss the reopening of places of worship under lockdown level 3.
The meeting was organised under the auspices of the South African Council of Churches (SACC).
The president later announced that places of worship would be open under level3 but that people were not allowed to be more than 50.
As some church leaders like Pastor Alph Lukau of Alleluia Ministries International and Bishop Barnabas Lekganyane of the ZCC refused to reopen their church saying they could not risk the lives of members of their congregations, there are those that welcomed the decision by government.
Other religious leaders, however, have decided to go back to church citing that the community needs the church at this difficult time.
They say they will take all precautionary measures to make sure that hygiene and social distancing rules are followed.
