Economist: Investment is needed for faster growth

Johannesburg – Economist Azar Jammine said investors are needed for the economy to grow faster.

Jammine was reacting to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s mid-term budget, delivered in Parliament on Thursday.

Godondwana adjusted South Africa’s economic course for the next three years.

Following his speech, the rand appeared to be stronger.

“For me, the most positive feature of this budget was the statement that we cannot rely on these commodity price windfalls to continue. What we desperately need is to grow the economy faster,” said Jammine.

“That’s just not good enough and barely enough to keep pace with the growth in the population let alone to make inroads into the rising trend of unemployment.”
