Johannesburg – The Health Department said low stock levels have hindered the vaccine rollout.
But it said with the arrival of more doses, it hopes to ramp up the drive next week.
A vaccine donation from the US is among the vaccines to arrive.
“We were running very low on stocks and unable to gear up all of our capacity both in the public and private sector,” said the National Health Department’s Nicholas Crisp.
“Now those sites that we have been unable to open up — that were asking for us to provide them — can start to happen during the course of this week. We got J&J vaccines on Thursday last week.
“We received 2.8 million over the weekend, there was another almost 1.5 million [that] arrived on Sunday afternoon and during the next couple of days, the remainder of the 5.6 million arrives,” Crisp said.
“By the end of this week we should be gearing up and certainly by next week we should be in full float again.”
