Gym workers, enthusiasts to embark on silent protest

South Africa

Johannesburg – Gym employees and fitness enthusiasts will hold silent protests around the country against the closure of gyms.

They are calling on the government to consider reopening the facilities.

They say the industry has lost income and there will be even more job losses.

“We are hoping that they will take notice of the 29,000 jobs that are at stake. About 31% of the industry has already retrenched and another 14% will have retrenched by the end of July.

“It looks like the gym industry might have 37% of the industry employees left if we don’t open soon,” said Grant Austin from FitSA.

Gyms have been closed since the beginning of the lockdown.’
