Heineken to buy South Africa’s Distell

Johannesburg – Heineken has agreed to buy South African wine and spirits maker, Distell.

The deal, costing R40-billion, will create a new regional group that will compete with rival and Anheuser-Busch InBev and spirits giant Diageo.

The deal is yet to be approved by shareholders.

Heineken will produce the brewer’s signature lager and Namibia’s Windhoek, as well as Distell brands like Klipdrift brandy and Savanna cider.

A number of wines for export will also be included.

According to data from Bllomberg, Heineken and the Public Investment Corporation each have just over a 30% stake in Distell.
