Johannesburg – When the unemployment grant was announced, people were confused about how to apply for it. The grant may be lodged electronically and once the application has been lodged, the qualifying applicant will be paid an amount of R350 per month from May to October 2020.
To qualify for the grant, the applicant must be a South African citizen, a refugee registered with Home Affairs. The applicant must also be over the age of 18, unemployed, not receiving any income, not receiving a social grant, not receiving any unemployment insurance benefits, not receiving a stipend from the National Student Financial Fund Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and not residing in a government-funded or subsidised institution.
To apply, applicants can send a Whatsapp message to 0600 123 456 and select SASSA or email to SRD@sassa.gov.za.
Sassa is still finalising the SMS, self-help desks and online application process.
Prospective applicants will need the following compulsory information for the application:
Identity number/Department of Home Affairs permit
Name and surname as captured in the ID (and initials)
Banking details – Bank name and account number
Contact details
Proof of residential address
