Home Affairs considers new ID number system

South Africa

Johannesburg – The Department of Home Affairs is considering assigning random identity numbers to South Africans, to replace the current structured 13-digit system.

Home Affairs said random ID numbers are more secure and private.

The department also said the proposed system will also be more inclusive.

While the department still wants to consult with people who will be affected, it’s proposing using an “X” or “alternative digit” in place of the seventh number of an ID for people whose gender identity is not male or female.

Home Affairs director-general Tommy Makhode said the new system would help safeguard against identity theft.
