State officials in northern Mexico say gunmen killed the owner of a newspaper and one of the policemen who had been assigned to protect him following earlier threats.

The Sorona state prosecutor’s office said Jorge Miguel Armenta Avalos was attacked while leaving a restaurant Saturday afternoon in downtown Ciudad Obregon.

The municipal police officer, Orlando Antonio Ruvalcaba Flores, was also killed and a fellow officer was wounded.

Armenta was the director of Medio Obson and El Tiempo, which were published in printing and online.

State prosecutor Claudia Indira Contreras has come out and vowed that they would pursue all possible angles, but there were apparently no suspects yet.

According to Reporters Without Borders, Armento is the third journalist slain in Mexico this year. In March, reporter Maria Elena Ferral was gunned down in the street of Papantla and last month, news website editor Victor Fernando Alvarez’s body was found in Acapulco 10 days after he disappeared.
