Kaizer Chiefs push ahead with plans to offload midfielder

Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be pushing ahead with plans to offload Kenyan midfielder Anthony “Teddy” Akumu.

Following an underwhelming 2021/22 season in which he made just two league starts is not believed to be interim Amakhosi coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard’s plans next season.

Mind you, whether Zwane and Sheppard themselves are in Kaizer Chiefs’ plans for next season remains to be seen.

Akumu signed from Zambian side ZESCO United during Ernst Middendorp’s spell in charge at Naturena in January 2020 and featured regularly under the German coach.

This season Akumu has started just two of nine total DStv Premiership appearances with his most recent start coming on 28 November 2021 against Swallows FC when Stuart Baxter was still in charge.

Akumu enjoyed all of his game time this season under Baxter and was also used frequently by Gavin Hunt last season.

When Sheppard and Zwane took over from Hunt last season, Akumu didn’t feature and was only used when Baxter arrived at the club.

The only potential sticking point in offloading Akumu is that he still has a year remaining on his current deal. The 29-year-old will be placed on the transfer list if no agreement can be reached in terminating his existing contract.
