Kieswetter: High unemployment rate greatly concerning

South Africa

Johannesburg – Tax season is upon us and according to the commissioner of the South African Revenue Services (SARS), Edward Kieswetter, the high rate of unemployment is greatly concerning.

Kieswetter said the unemployment rate of 32.6%, coupled with company closures, is anticipated to have an immeasurable impact on the tax base.

He adds that the lockdowns have also impacted collection activities, which are linked to the state of the company.

Despite the economy starting to show signs of recovery, Kieswetter said it will take some time before it returns to pre-Covid-19 levels.

Kieswetter was speaking at the virtual launch of the tax filing season.
