Johannesburg – Sport has been thrown a lifeline. After federations had petitioned government about the possibility of making a return during lockdown, it has now been confirmed, although specifics remain unclear for now.
“Public training, fitness, and recreational facilities remain closed except those conducting non-contact sports matches without spectators,” Cogta Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said.
She said health protocols and social distancing must be strictly observed, which includes the wearing of masks.
“We will lift the curfew and allow more time for exercise, walking, and cycling,” she said.
“However, this is permitted as long as this is not done in organised groups.”
South Africa will move to Level 3 of the lockdown on 1 June.
