Lobby group joins calls to scrap VAT on some chicken products

Johannesburg – Lobby group FairPlay is calling for the scrapping of Value-Added Tax on some chicken products.

The group says many South Africans will be turning to chicken for protein due to rising prices.

The war in Ukraine and the Covid-19 pandemic have resulted in the entire globe experiencing significant increases in food prices.

“Chicken is SA’s popular protein and it’s very important that every step is taken to ensure that poor people have some relief. The only way they can get relief is scrapping VAT,” said FairPlay’s Francois Baird.

“We’re not asking for cooked chicken to be scrapped because we think that’s for people who can afford to buy at a higher price. We have to protect children and mothers to make it possible for them to get access to protein.”
