Mali’s military promises transition leading to polls

Mali – The armed forces have ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita from power and declared their intention to set up government ahead of new elections.

This follows the president’s appearance on state television to say that he had resigned from office.

The presidents and his prime minister, Boubou Cisse, were taken at gunpoint from the capital to a military camp.

The United Nations and African Union have denounced the military takeoever.

The regional organisation, Ecowas, announced a blockade along the country’s borders and have suspended financial links.

The UN Security Council will meet later on Wednesday.
