Marikana massacre: Four police officers acquitted of all charges

South Africa

Johannesburg – Former North West Deputy Police Commissioner Mzondase Mpembe and three other senior police officers have been acquitted of all three charges related to the Marikana massacre.

General Mpembe and his co-accused were facing charges of defeating the ends of justice.

This is for allegedly failing to report the death in custody of Modisaotsile Sagalala, who was shot during the Marikana unrest in 2012.

Judge Ronald Hendricks ruled that the state failed to prove the guilt of the accused beyond any reasonable doubt.

The NPA says it will study the judgment and make a decision on the way forward.
