A Nigerian politician claims his countrymen are ordering pizzas from Britain and having them flown 4,000 miles on British Airways flights.
Agriculture Minister Audu Ogbeh said the African nation is relying too much on foreign imports which are seen as status symbols by too many people.
‘They buy (pizza) in London, they bring it on British Airways in the morning to pick up at the airport,’ he announced to a Senate Agriculture Committee in the capital city of Abuja.
He criticised citizens who import anything from rice to tomato paste because they think ‘it shows status, class, that they only eat imported things’.
He added: ‘It is a very annoying situation and we have to move a lot faster in cutting down some of these things.’
His comments were ridiculed on Twitter, where one user joked: ‘Dear @British_Airways, how come you didn’t tell us you run a pizza delivery service to Nigeria? Is there an app for this?’
