Nine months later Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital not repaired

South Africa

Johannesburg – Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital still hasn’t been fully repaired, nine months after a devastating fire.

Key parts of the hospital were destroyed and this has had a crippling effect on Gauteng’s health system.

“To be honest, nothing of substance has occurred from last year to now. There have been lots of rumblings and conversations,” said the hospital’s Head of Internal Medicine, Professor Adam Mahomed.

“The MEC and the Health [Department] was at the hospital on Friday but if you’re asking me if anything has happened to the hospital to fix up the hospital, the answer is zero — we’re still running on 40 percent capacity and patients are receiving substandard care.”
