Johannesburg – The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has raised concerns about comments made by EFF leader Julius Malema.
The union said the statements Malema made against police is a call for lawlessness.
It said it protects all South Africans, regardless of their political affiliation.
Popcru said people should not take up arms when there are platforms for dialogue.
The union said in a statement, “the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union notes with disdain the irresponsible threats made against members of the South African Police Service by EFF leader Julius Malema while visiting the Mofulatshepe township, Mohokare Municipality in the Free State yesterday [Sunday].”
Malema spoke against the police during a community gathering in the Free State.
“If South African police want a fight they must declare it, we will treat them the same way we treated them in the ’80s,” said Malema.
“We will not only fight them at the picket lines, we will go to their homes and fight them in their own houses, with their own families.
“We are not scared of [the] police, they think these uniforms give them some superior power. We will see you after you take off your uniform at night, at home when you are about to eat pap, we will come and ask you to repeat the nonsense you were doing or saying on the streets.”
