Bloemfontein – The Cheetahs on Wednesday welcomed the return of lock Reniel Hugo.

Hugo, 29, is back in Bloemfontein after a stint in Japan where he played for Top League outfit Toyota Verblitz since 2018.

He was part of the Free State Cheetahs team that won the Currie Cup in 2016 and was one of the leading players during the team’s inaugural PRO14 season in 2017/18.

The Cheetahs released a press statement where Hugh said he was happy to return to Bloemfontein and looks forward to playing alongside old lock partner Carl Wegner again.

“I am really looking forward to coming back to the Cheetahs. I had some fond memories while I was there in Bloemfontein.

“I am excited to be joining up with the team again and playing in the PRO14

“It’s going to be nice to play with Carl. We formed a close bond over the years. When we were playing in Japan, we spoke about it being nice if we were able to play together again in South Africa, and now there is another chance for us,” Hugo said.

Hugo will report for duty at the Cheetahs on July 1 on a two-year contract.
