The Former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and wife Grace have been flown out to Singapore for “emergency medical treatment” over their various ailments.

Grace Mugabe, 53,  has suffered from complications following the removal of her appendix in 2015. Whereas Robert, aged 94, has long been rumoured to be battling prostate cancer.

However, questions have been raised concerning finances of their trips as well as treatment. Zimbabwe’s health system is currently undergoing a serious strain, due to a recent cholera outbreak in the country causing a strain on the country’s finances. As a result, the issue of  Mugabe’s medical bills has been a topic of discussion.

The Mugabes left on Sunday on a flight chartered by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government, New Zimbabwe.com reported

Approximately, $550 000 was used to charter a top-of-the range jet from a company in Qatar, said the private Standard newspaper.

“The money, it has been established, was sourced by a local business tycoon with vast interests in energy, mining and agriculture, who is close to Mnangagwa,” the paper said.
