SAHRC appeals for calm at Brackenfell school

South Africa

Johannesburg – The South African Human Rights Commission is appealing for calm at Brackenfell High School in Cape own on Friday.

A demonstration erupted into chaos as police fired teargas and water cannons at a crowd of EFF protesters.

Andre Gaum from the SAHRC said:  “obviously one will have to look at the reasons that prompted the police to fire that teargas but from the side of the Human Rights Commission, we’d like to ask the police that they exercise restraint in terms of their actions.

“The same goes for the EFF and anyone else attending the protest action. We issued a statement yesterday [Thursday] that called for calm and that the right to protest action. which is a fundamental right, is exercised in a manner that is envisaged in the constitution, peacefully and unarmed, and does not infringe other rights.”
