Sex workers call for government support

South Africa

Johannesburg – Sex workers continue to call on government to protect and support them during the nationwide lockdown.

“During the lockdown, it became even more apparent to us. Sex workers will call and says I’m going to the store to get essentials and I’ve just been harassed. Police officers have just violated me…” said Nosipho Vidima of the Human Rights Officer for the Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT).

Vidima added that most sex workers are struggling to put food on the table during the lockdown.

“We also blaming government and saying that if only you had decriminalised year earlier on, you’d have workers filing along with every worker for UIF,” Vidima said.
