Tiger Brands faces litigation over listeriosis

Tiger Brands faces another round of litigation from listeriosis claimants.

In December, the South Gauteng High Court granted certification for a class action lawsuit.

Certification is a legal process authorising different categories of complainants.

The next step in the case begins on Monday.

The liability phase requires claimants to prove Tiger Brand’s liability for harm, including death.

Between 2017 and 2018, over 1,000 people contracted listeriosis, resulting in 218 deaths.

Nearly 100 of those who died were newborns.

The Health Department traced the outbreak to the company’s Polokwane polony plant.
