Tshwane workers threaten to escalate wage increase protests

South Africa

The stench across the capital’s CBD is getting worse.

Workers affiliated to Samwu are escalating their wage increase protests.

They’re demanding an 18 percent pay hike in line with senior city officials.

Garbage was strewn across the city and several intersections remain blocked.

Metro Police are calling for help saying are overstretched, but will help where they can.

Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said some of their members are affiliated to Samwu.

“We are saying now we are relying more on other law enforcement agencies,” said Mahamba.
