WATCH: Police in riot gear escort matrics to dance

South Africa

A clip showing learners going to their matric dance receiving a full police escort is currently making rounds on Facebook.

The clip, that shows a police cavalcade marching as smartly dressed matrics walk towards the dance amid green smoke, is reportedly from a matric dance in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

The crowd have viewed this with mixed feelings, some have expressed outrage and considered it as a waste of resources while others compared the situation to when traffic police escorted the Guptas after they infamously landed at Waterkloof airforce base for a wedding.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi sided with those outraged on social media, saying the conduct of the police in the clip goes against the rules and an investigation will take place, a news report from The Mercury stated.

“I am deeply disturbed by what I observed,” lieutenant general Mkhwanazi said.
