Johannesburg – There’s a hefty fine for contravening the National Environmental Act.
The Rand West municipality in Gauteng has pleaded guilty to this and has been slapped with a R10 million fine.

Only R3 million of this is payable.
The municipality discharged partially untreated water into a river threatening the lives of communities.

Complainants hope this court victory will be a first step to holding municipalities responsible for their negligence.
