The performer refuses to live her life according to ancient cultural dictates and wants to ‘do things differently’.
The controversial performer first shot to fame some years ago for her preference for ditching underwear and has since been labelled somewhat of a feminist icon by her supporters due to her insistence on going against the grain.
Zodwa (real name Zodwa Libram) shook the status quo once again earlier this month when she got down on bended knee to propose to her fiance Ntobeko Linda.
She purchased rings for both of them and has since expressed her wish to send representatives from her family to his family to negotiate lobola.
In various African traditions where the bride price is observed, it is the man that pays his bride’s family in a heterosexual relationship. Which family gets the payment is determined differently in queer relationships.
In a recent interview with Daily Sun, Linda revealed that he would also be taking on Libram’s surname when they officially marry.
“We have talked about it and we agree,” said Zodwa before saying that culture had nothing to do with the way they choose to live their lives.
“But culture has nothing to do with us. We were not there when old people decided to do things their way. We will decide things for ourselves,” added Zodwa.
“We are different and we want to do things differently. Some people may not like the way we do things but we don’t care,” said Zodwa before adding, “I love my fans but this is a personal issue.”
