Bafana Bafana leave for Zimbabwe today with squad in Covid-19 ‘bubble’

Bafana Bafana have a full player compliment in preparation for their opening 2022 Soccer World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe on Friday, 3 September.

Gift Links and Luther Singh have entered the ‘bubble’ meaning that all 23 original players that were selected are present for national duty.

Njabulo Ngcobo, however, got a late call-up amid media frenzy over his exclusion.

His call-up is not a replacement but cautionary after concerns arose over defensive midfielder Mothobi Mvala.

“There is slight concern on Mvala who has a groin strain which the medical team is working on,” said team doctor Tshepo Molobi.

Siyanda Xulu took a knock playing for his Hapoel Tel Aviv team two weeks ago which resulted in a minor head injury.

“Stitches will be removed today and he will be off the injury-concerns list but I will be monitoring him closely,” said Molobi.

So far the team has had four rounds of Covid-19 tests for every single member present (players and staff) in the bubble ad it’s good news all around so far.

“Traveling in a pandemic is not easy. We have taken lessons from past camps and have decided that casting a ‘bubble’ lessens the spread and keeps everyone safe, especially with the team traveling internationally, every precaution has been taken,” explained Molobi.

The team will depart for Harare, Zimbabwe on Wednesday, 1 September.

Bafana Bafana will play Zimbabwe on Friday, September 3 at 15;00.
