The Minister of police, Bheki Cele and national police commissioner General Khehla Sitole are expected to introduce a tactical response team (TRT) that will patrol the streets of Westbury in an effort to curb the high levels of crime in the area.
The SAPs said in a statement that the TRT will be dedicated to the Westbury policing precinct “as part of the broader strategy to fight the scourge of drugs and gang-related violence in the area”.
Cele will introduce the team after Westbury residents embarked on a protest that led to road closures and the destruction of a Rea Vaya bus station.
The protests were reportedly sparked by the death of a 41-year-old woman who was shot last week Thursday. The woman’s 10-year-old niece was also wounded in the shooting.
The police minister made a visit to the community on Tuesday to listen to their concerns. The minister had announced the introduction of the TRT as one of the interventions to address crime in the area.
