Johannesburg – Eskom is partnering with coal miners Exxaro and Seriti Resources to develop renewable energy projects.
The companies are the largest coal suppliers to the power utility. They contribute about 80% of Eskom’s annual coal supply.

Phase 1 of the envisaged project will see the construction of various solar energy facilities.
According to Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter, this agreement will contribute to the utility’s efforts to achieve its aims of having a net-zero emissions status by 2050.

Exxaro and Seriti collectively contribute over 80% of Eskom’s coal supply a year.
Roland Tatnall, the managing director for energy at Exxaro Resources, said the business has started developing renewable energy solutions for the company’s own mines.
