Court to rule in AfriForum’s challenge over beach closures

South Africa

Johannesburg – The High Court is expected to make a ruling in the matter between AfriForum and government over the closure of beaches.

The lobby group says limiting access to beaches countrywide amounts to a restriction of a basic human right.

“Our case was based on two pillars, which are that there really is serious economic consequences for the various businesses along the Garden Route in the first place,” said AfriForum’s legal representative, Daniel Eloff.

“Secondly, and this was ventilated quite a bit during our court hearing today, the fact that government admits that they didn’t really respond to our argument that beaches are a very unique place with a low risk of COVID-19 transmissions.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has lost its legal bid to reopen the Garden Route beaches.

The Western Cape High Court, however, did grant the party a small concession.

Cape Town’s beaches will now be open from 06am until 7pm.
