Families identify bodies of illegal miners

South Africa

Klerksdorp – Over half of the bodies of illegal miners found at a mine shaft in Orkney in the North West have been identified as Lesotho nationals.

Families have arrived to identify the remains of their loved ones at a government mortuary in Krugersdorp.

According to police, the body count is now at 21.

Burnt and decomposing bodies of the illegal miners were found outside a disused mine shaft last week.

It’s believed that the illegal miners may have been killed by a gas explosion at an abandoned shaft.

The Lesotho government has confirmed that over 10 of the bodies discovered are Lesotho nationals.

“The number has actually increased now because a lot of people have arrived,” said Lesotho General Council, Selimo Thabane.
