Johannesburg to elect new mayor

South Africa

Johannesburg – The City of Johannesburg will convene a special council meeting to elect a new mayor on Friday after the passing of Jolidee Matongo, who died in a car crash two weeks ago.

Matongo, who took over after the passing of his predecessor Geoff Makhubo, served for just over one month.

The African National Congress is confident that its candidate Mpho Moerane will be elected.

Moerane is a former MMC for environment and infrastructure services in the city and ANC Johannesburg regional treasurer.
