Malawi – Malawi’s government has announced that the chief justice will not go on leave pending retirement.

Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda had been directed by former President Mmutharika’s government to start his leave until his retirement, a move that sparked criticism.

The chief justice led the Supreme Court in its decision to nullify President Mutharika’s election making way for a re-run which he lost to the opposition.

The new government led by President Lazarus Chakwera has withdrawn the order and stated that matters of the chief justice’s leave are between him and the judiciary service commission.

The new notice was posted on the official government Twitter account.
