Africa

A man aged 48 made an appearance in court on Monday, after he was accused of attempting to defraud people around the world of $20.5 million under the pretext of being the first lady of Nigeria.

Julius Anyawu Uche was charged with 10 offences under cybercrimes legislation after he sent out scam emails in the name of President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha. He pleaded guilty before a sitting judge at the Federal High Court in Lagos. He is expected to remain in custody until a further hearing at the same court, early next year, on January 18.

Two others who have been accused for similar cases, appeared in the same court, one of them, Agu Ifeanyi George, 48, alleging to be a medical doctor seeking funds to relocate from war-torn Syria with her family.

According to the police, Uche – known as “Musa Mohammed”, is believed to have conspired with “others at large”.
