Massmart strike: Union calls for consumer boycott

Johannesburg – Union SACCAWU is asking people to boycott all Massmart stores as its strike against the retailer continues.

Workers downed tools on Friday over wages and working conditions.

“SACCAWU has made a call for a consumer boycott starting from today [Monday],” the union’s Cyril Dibakwane said.

“We’re calling for society at large to boycott all products of Makro stores, Game stores, Jumbo Cash&Carry, Pretoria West Cash&Carry, Cambridge and other Cash&Carry stores in the country.”

Dibakwane said the boycott would be in support of the workers’ demands fort eh reinstatement of retrenched workers, stopping of reduction of working hours for permanent employees and the introduction of approval labour brokers.
