Johannesburg – Income support grants and the public sector wage bill are two of the big spending pressures facing Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana as he delivers his Medium Term Budget on Thursday.
The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) is calling for a R1,500) monthly grant.
The minister has been gifted with a higher than expected tax revenue collection mainly because of the stellar performance in the mining sector.
But he has public sector unions on his back.
Unions are not happy to be at the centre of expenditure cuts and are equally upset by the minister’s utterances to parliament that Treasury pencilled in no wage increases for next year.
