A mother and her child have been critically injured after a giraffe trampled them at a farm in Hoesdpruit, Limpopo, on Monday.

“Assessments showed that a mother, believed to be in her 30s, as well as a 3-year-old boy, had sustained numerous injuries and were both in a critical condition,” ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said in a statement on Tuesday.

Upon arriving at the Hoedspruit estate, paramedics treated the mother and child and then rushed them to a nearby hospital via helicopter.

“Further treatment and advanced life support interventions were initiated, in an effort to stabilise the patient’s vital signs. Once treated, the two patients were airlifted to Busamed Modderfontein private hospital for urgent treatment,” the statement concludes.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined.
