Severe thunderstorms to bring heavy rains to Gauteng and KZN

South Africa

The SA Weather Services has issued a warning about severe thunderstorms in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal

With heavy rainfalls expected, South Africans are urged to drive with caution as localised flooding is also expected.  This comes after the weather service said Tropical Storm Gombe posed no real threat to the country.

Last week the storm moved over Madagascar and showed no serious weather concerns for South Africa.

However, it was still too soon to track Gombe’s exact path.

The severe thunderstorms that are going to hit parts of northern Gauteng, including Pretoria and KwaZulu-Natal are not linked to phenomenal weather patterns as a result of Tropical Storm Gombe.

Residents have been warned to park cars undercover as there are high possibilities of excessive lightning and hail.

“These thunderstorms are expected to become severe in places in the east, resulting in heavy downpours, large amounts of small hail, excessive lightning and possible strongly gusting surface winds,” the weather office said.
