Signal Hill fire contained

South Africa

Firefighters are battled to bring a massive fire under control on Signal Hill. The fire was being fanned by a strong south-easterly wind.

Theo Lane, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, said the fire had begun near Quarry Road and has progressed over Signal Hill to the Fresnaye area.

A large portion of the fire is not accessible to rescue workers as helicopters cannot safely be dispatched to the area at night so ground crews are working to contain the blaze.

According to authorities the cause of the fire is unknown but would be investigated.
