Johannesburg – Journalists and other media operatives have been caught in the crossfire in Eldorado Park, as police and residents clash.
The police opened fire on community members.
Residents are demanding justice for a teenager who was shot and killed, allegedly at the hands of police.
Tensions spilt over when community members marched to Eldorado Park police station calling for answers.
16-year-old Nathaniel Julius died in hospital last night.
According to his family, the teen had run out of house to try and find food. While he was outside, a police van by and switched the emergency lights on. It is understood, the boy got excited, and the police allegedly shot at him.
He was dumped at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital where he later died.
The matter is not being handled by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
Protesters took to the streets, calling for the removal of the officers involved in Julius’ death. A local man from the area’s Economic Civil Organisation said the police in the area are corrupt.
“They are the cause of the unhappiness in our community,” he said.
