London – After almost a week of protests across the United States following the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis, thousands took to the streets of central London on Wednesday to protest racism and show solidarity with their American counterparts.
A crowd met in Hyde Park, near Buckingham Palace, before walking towards the country’s Parliament.
The crowd chanted “justice now”, others held placards reading “Black lives matter” and “We can’t breathe” – the last words Floyd, 46, said before he died after a Minnesota police officer pushed his knee on his neck during an arrest last Monday.
Since then, there has been protests in Minneapolis and multiple US cities, including Washington, Los Angeles, New York, and Houston. This has sparked demonstrations overseas in places such as France, Brazil, South Africa, and New Zealand.
The gathering in London was largely peaceful, although minor scuffles broke out between protesters and the police later
