Johannesburg – More than 1,000 workers are on strike at food producer Tiger Brands.

The African Meat Industry and Allied Trade Union say the wage strike at the company’s Beacon brand in KwaZulu-Natal started a week ago after a deadlock in negotiations.

The company had been hit with a wave of misfortune in July.

The unrest and looting in July set them back R150 million.

The company also had more than R1-billion wiped off its market value after recalling millions of canned vegetable products in the same month.
