South Africa’s Kevin Anderson could face world No 1 Novak Djokovic in the second round at Wimbledon which gets under way on Monday, 28 June.

Djokovic, the “defending” champion from the last time the tournament was played in 2019, was drawn against wild card Jack Draper in Friday’s draw.

If he comes through that match, and Kevin Anderson gets the better of Chilean qualifier Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera, the pair will do battle in the second round next Wednesday.

Anderson and Djokovic have faced each other on 11 occasions at Wimbledon, including the final in 2018 which Djokovic won 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).

Their most memorable battle on the grass at SW19 came in the Round of 16 in 2015 when Anderson won the opening two sets in tier-breakers only to lose the match in five sets 6-7 (6/8), 6-7 (6/8), 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.

Their first encounter was in 2011 in the second round in a match Djokovic won comfortably 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Anderson has seen his ranking drop to 103rd from a career high of fifth having been beset by injuries in recent years. He’s only played nine matches to date in 2021, winning four and losing five.

Meanwhile, Djokovic will be eyeing a sixth Wimbledon title and a record-equaling 20th grand slam.
