Young people are being urged to take a stand against gender-based violence, with officials warning that the number of rape and gender-based violence cases is increasing.
Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole says dealing with the horrors of GBV should be the responsibility as a whole.
“Young people are both victims and perpetrators of crime. The scourge of gender-based violence and femicide disproportionally affects young women. It has been dubbed a twin pandemic alongside COVID-19 and cannot be left to continue in a democratic society,” said Sithole.
“The youth are a very important stakeholder in silencing the guns that are said to devour the youth, women and children.
“You must therefore observe and treat today with the vital importance it deserves, as robust solution-based engagements are the key to get to the root of the problems that are deteriorating the moral fibre of our society. We do not want to be counting statistics because each digit represents a life lost or future vandalised.”
