Johannesburg – A number of leading economists and academics have come together, to lobby for the scrapping of Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s supplementary budget.
The group says it plans to take the matter to court, as they don’t agree with Mboweni’s plan and remedy for the economy.
Co-Director of the Institute for Economic Justice, Neil Coleman said: “what we see in this austerity budget is a regression, a massive cutting of the available resources and in fact, what treasury is doing is that they’re robbing Pamela to pay Paul. They’re taking away the R400-600-billion in the next few years, part of that is going to the stimulus package, and comes from the cuts in education, in transport, infrastructure, etc. It’s going to have a devastating impact on the availability of education, health, transport and education to the poorest parts of the population.”
