Johannesburg – The South African Federation of Trade Union (Saftu) has welcomed the report by a panel on the feasibility of introducing a basic income grant.
However, it disagrees with the suggestion of going forward with the R350 Covid-19 relief grant.
Saftu said government must introduce a basic income grant of R1,500.
“We welcome the report because this is what Saftu has been calling for. The only problem we have is that the report says that going into next year there must be a phased implementation process, and these phased in processes must take forward what is already there, which is the COVID relief grant which is at the value of R350,” said Saftu Trevor Shaku.
“It must carry it into the next financial year. That is where Saftu has the problem with the report because the grant must be introduced at a value of R1,500.”
