The murder of 17-year-old Sifiso Telile from Chartsworth in Durban has once again highlighted the racial tensions between Indians and black communities in the Phoenix and surrounding areas.
Telile was allegedly murdered on 31 July at night, by the father of his Indian girlfriend.
The murder of the teenager caused outrage after he was stabbed with a knife and beaten with a pik.
According to Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, two suspects, a 17-year-old and a 61-year-old, have since been arrested.
The two suspects are expected to apply for bail on Friday.
Initial police investigations suggest that Sifiso Telile was in a relationship with a 16-year-old Indian girl in Chartsworth whose mother was aware of her relationship.
However, her stepfather did not approve of the teenagers’ relationship and together with the 17-year-old suspect accosted Sifiso while the young couple were at a friend’s house.
Sifiso’s family is not happen with the manner in which police in Chatsworth have handled the case, and the family has accused police of tampering with the statements of witnesses, Sifiso’s girlfriend and his mother.
Sifiso’s aunt Tulile Telile is demanding justice for his murder.
