Tanzania’s President John Magufuli has urged women to stop taking birth control pills.
He said the country needs more people despite the fact that the country has one of the highest birth rates recorded in the world. After these comments were made, the speaker of parliament placed a ban on female lawmakers to prevent them from wearing fake nails and eye-lashes in parliament.
“Women can now give up contraceptive methods,” Magufuli said.
The comments made by the president attracted criticism from opposition MP Cecil Mwambe criticised. He argued that they contradicted the country’s health policy, the BBC reported.
Tanzania cuurently holds a high birth rate of more than five children per woman. 50% of its 53 million people live on less than $2 a day.
Female MPs have also been banned from wearing short dresses and jeans, while women visiting the parliament are expected to also adhere to the dress code.
